Words We Read

Words

Isn’t it funny how books can touch us in the deepest and most meaningful way!? Obviously there is a reason that authors do what they do, and it’s just so fascinating that they can take ordinary words and put them into the context that makes us feel emotions, that makes us cry. We are always in awe of the talent levels of authors. Even the authors that are more “mediocre” have more talent than we could ever dream. It’s amazing what authors do, and we are in awe of your work (whether it’s a book for us or not).

Book quotes are some of our favorite things, ones that we tend to forget to share. They remind of the story we read, of the journey we are on in our lives, and the feelings that we have had (or are having) in our lives. These are the quotes that we write down wherever we can, that we put up all over the internet, that we share with so many people because they are on a journey too…and maybe these words can help.

So today, and randomly throughout the months, we will be sharing some words that we have read that have hit us. For our first post we have a very special theme for you.

For the 20th birthday of the Harry Potter books, we have decided to pick a book from the Harry Potter series to share with you! If you are among the mass of Harry Potter nerds (just like us) then you know that it is SO hard to pick a quote. JK Rowling just has such a way with words, and we could probably pick multiple quotes from each book. But here are some of the quotes that have stuck with us…

“If you want to know what a man’s like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals.”

― J.K. RowlingHarry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

“We’ve all got both light and dark inside of us. What matters is the part we choose to act on. That’s who we really are. ”

― J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix

“It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.”

J.K. RowlingHarry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets

“I solemnly swear I am up to no good.”

J.K. RowlingHarry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban

“There are some things you can’t share without ending up liking each other, and knocking out a twelve-foot mountain troll is one of them.”

J.K. RowlingHarry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone

“You sort of start thinking anything’s possible if you’ve got enough nerve.”

J.K. RowlingHarry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince

“After all this time?”

“Always,” said Snape.

when-your-friend-freaks-out-over-real-housewives

That’s right! Starting this Monday (June 26th) we will be opening up Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (for the first time in AGES) so that we can once again get lost in that world. Let us know if you want to join us (comment or email) and we can set something more formal up. But that means you should probably be looking for more Harry Potter on the blog in the future.

NOTE: We will be using the hashtag #mdwstreadalong on twitter and instagram if you want to keep up to date with what we are doing. We are pretty pumped for this.

QUESTION: What are some of your favorite Harry Potter quotes?

I was so very excited to get my hands on a copy of this book. I absolutely loved the synopsis from the minute I read it and knew I just had to give it a shot. I found this book to be thoroughly enjoyable. Is it a stand out book for me this year? Sadly, no. Did I enjoy it even though it didn’t make the list of the best for me? Yes! I can definitely see where people would adore this book and why we need more books like this. I could definitely spend this whole post listing things I loved. I could tell you all about the awesome female main characters who were strong and independent, trying to figure out their world while fighting for their beliefs. I could tell you about the diversity of this book and the amazing characters that come out of that. I could tell you how there is some awesome romances happening, but they aren’t the main focus of the story the entire time. I could tell you about the time period and how it works within the plot of the story. But, instead I am going to share with you some quotes.

The writing in this book was fantastic. Though this book didn’t 100% click with me for some unknown reason I found that the writing really spoke to me. It was definitely my style and really what hooked me into this book to being with…

“More than anything, she wanted to kiss him. He was so bright and beautiful and vulnerable in the daylight. But she couldn’t let herself.”

“They have some fine music down there, though,” Charlie said, a hint of wistfulness in his tone. “In August, even when the air is so thick and humid that the crickets are in a frenzy, you can still hear them songs for miles Nothing more beautiful than a night in Alabama.”

He turned his head, and Ada felt his eyes on her profile.

“Well, almost nothing,” he said.

He was using a stick to gently nudge a starfish into the oncoming tide. She’d thought for sure it was dead, but he assured her it wasn’t.

“Chin up, young man,” he’d said to the pale-yellow star, sounding so much like their father that she’d wanted to giggle. “You’ve got a second chance to get it right.”

This book was super enjoyable. And, looking back at it, I think that the only issue in this whole equation was me. Sometimes books don’t 100% click, and that’s fine. I think this book and I clicked at like 80%, still enjoyable, worth reading, and worth recommending, but not in the ALL time favorite of 2016 list. It did make the Enjoyable Reads of 2016 list, and I am so glad that I was able to give it a chance. And even with not falling head over heels in love I still really enjoyed the world that the book explored, the historical time period, and the main characters. I really liked what this author did with a story like this, and I cannot wait to see what else she has in store for the book world.

This book comes out on Tuesday, October 11th! Definitely get out there and give this book a shot! Well worth the read!

So…two questions for you. 1) Have you read this book? 2) What’s one book that you enjoyed yet didn’t make your all time favorite list?

Top Ten Tuesday: Top Ten Inspiring Quotes From Books

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and The Bookish
Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and The Bookish

As a reader you know when you hit those quotes. Those words that you read and are shaking your head in agreement as they hit in you in some way. This week’s list is all about those quotes. My quotes…I dunno if they are necessarily inspirational, but they are things that really hit me as I was reading them. They were true to life, true to my thought process about things, and made me wish I had had these books YEARS ago when I was dealing with a wide variety of things that a lot of the books I read touch on (loss, grief, etc..).  So here they are, in no particular order.

  1. “The important people in our lives leave imprints. They may stay or go in the physical realm, but they are always there in your heart, because they helped form your heart. There’s no getting over that.” Dash and Lily’s Book of Dares
  2. “Each day means a new twenty-four hours. Each day means everything’s possible again. You live in the moment, you die in the moment, you take it all one day at a time.” Legend
  3. “If you want to know what a man’s like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals.” Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
  4. “So, I guess we are who we are for a lot of reasons. And maybe we’ll never know most of them. But even if we don’t have the power to choose where we come from, we can still choose where we go from there. We can still do things. And we can try to feel okay about them.” The Perks of Being a Wallflower
  5. “If every person in this room made it a rule that wherever you are, whenever you can, you will try to act a little kinder than is necessary – the world really would be a better place. And if you do this, if you act just a little kinder than is necessary, someone else, somewhere, someday, may recognize in you, in every single one of you, the face of God.” Wonder
  6. “I think there should be a rule that everyone in the world should get a standing ovation at least once in their lives.” Wonder (this book is just TOO quotable)
  7. “Much of my life had been devoted to trying not to cry in front of people who loved me, so I knew what Augustus was doing. You clench your teeth. You look up. You tell yourself that if they see you cry, it will hurt them, and you will be nothing but a Sadness in their lives, and you must not become a mere sadness, so you will not cry, and you say all of this to yourself while looking up at the ceiling, and then you swallow even though your throat does not want to close and you look at the person who loves you and smile.” The Fault in Our Stars
  8. “And that’s just it, isn’t it? That’s how we manage to survive the loss. Because love, it never dies, it never goes away, it never fades, so long as you hang on to it.” If I Stay
  9. “But still, I find the need to remind myself of the temporariness of a day, to reassure myself that I got through yesterday, I’ll get through today.” Where She Went
  10. “Do not forget in the darkness what you have been promised in the light.” Kisses from Katie: A Story of Relentless Love and Redemption (if you have not read this book I HIGHLY recommend it. It is inspiring and so very uplifting)

I love this weeks Top Ten Tuesday. I think it’s so interesting because these book quotes can tell you SO much about a person and the journey that they have been on throughout their lives until this very point, or at least…that’s how I felt when putting this list of quotes together. It was so hard to choose in some instances, and there were some that just didn’t make the cut. These quotes may be inspiring, but honestly..they made the list because of how they speak to me. All of the books are fantastic, and I highly recommend reading them if you have not.

What are some of your favorite quotes from books?

I had this song on repeat while writing this. I just felt like I should share.
