Story Time: A Friend for Mole by Nancy Armo

I received a copy of this book through Netgalley for an honest review. This in no way sways my thoughts or opinions.

A Friend for Mole by Nancy ArmoAn accidental encounter throws Mole and Wolf together. One is afraid of the light, the other is afraid of the dark. Together they learn that friends are all they need to conquer their fears.

When I was a children’s librarian I was always on the lookout for fun books that would teach kids life lessons that I found to be valuable. Some life lessons might be bravery, befriending someone no matter how different they are, taking a stand, etc. I was so happy to see that this book fit into some of those life lessons.

Mole decides to venture out of his cozy hole to see more of the world. Shockingly enough, he realizes how scary that new adventure is. Lucky for him he runs into someone who also has fears, but these fears balance each other out. They are fortunate enough to be able to help each other and to grow a strong bond of friendship that I think is important for children of all ages to see. I think the friendship is one of the biggest takeaways.

A Friend for Mole teaches children that they can be friends with people that are totally different from them, and that they can develop a deep friendship despite not being exactly alike. Mole and Wolf are not at all the same creatures, but they find way around it and become the best of friends.

Children can learn bravery from this book. They can learn to step out of their comfort zone and to explore what is unknown to them; who knows who they will meet. It also shows them that they never really know the battle that someone else could be facing or the fears that they have. Everyone has something in their lives, and this book shows us as readers to embrace that and to care for one another despite these fears and differences.

This book had some excellent life lessons, but it also had adorable pictures. I loved how the world around Mole and Wolf was drawn out, and I feel that it would be very visually appealing for children to see. Bonus points…the main character is a mole! We need books that feature ALL KINDS of animals.

All in all, I thought this was a fun, cute book with a really great message behind it. I would definitely put it into my lineup for story time if I were still a librarian.
